The book project A Continuing Pastoral Accompaniment of BECs in the Philippines: A 50-year Journey chronicles the experiences and insights of Monsignor Manuel Gabriel, executive secretary of the CBCP BEC Commission, in his 50-year journey as a priest who has built his pastoral work on the foundation of organizing and shepherding BCCs and BECs. It accompanies the reader in the journey of BECs all over the country.
ABOUT THE CBCP EPISCOPAL COMMISSION ON BASIC ECCLESIAL COMMUNITIES
The Basic Ecclesial Community is the local Church in synodality with and rooted in Basic Human Communities to build the Kingdom of God. Like “salt of the earth,” Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) are in communion with the Word and nourished around the Table of the Lord to be able to give life to “basic communities” that they seek to serve. BECs are servants of the unchurched, those at the periphery of human life, the poor and suffering. They walk with them with compassion and humility and accompany them to realize God’s Kingdom of justice, peace, and love. The BECs celebrated their 50th year in 2019. In 2021, the CBCP Permanent Council approved the elevation of the CBCP-BEC “Committee” to that of a “Commission.” The CBCP-BEC Commission officially coordinates the directions and thrusts of the BECs in keeping with the CBCP’s focus on Integral Evangelization (Inter-Commission collaborations) and Synodality at the various levels of the local Church (Diocese/Parish/BECs/Families).
